Serums: what’s all the fuss about?

There’s so much noise and confusion out there when it comes to serums and you’re probably wondering what all the fuss is about? Why should we think about including serums in our own skincare routine and what’s the difference between a serum and a moisturiser? We share everything we think you need to know and we’re going to keep it simple…

What are serums?

A serum differs from a moisturiser for one good reason – potency. Serums usually contain active ingredients that are designed for different skincare concerns. Applied after cleansing and before moisturising, you can target things like problem skin, dry skin and wrinkles.

Some serums are oil-based and some are water-based, which is why there’s so much confusion. A serum isn’t a facial oil and it’s not a moisturiser. But they might contain ingredients that moisturise your skin, such as hyaluronic acid or vitamin C for hydration. Think of a serum as a way of delivering powerful ingredients deep into your skin. Your moisturiser then acts as a protective barrier to seal in the serum so it can work on your skin.

Let’s talk science for a moment. Serums have a thin viscosity with active molecules, which means they penetrate the skin’s surface quicker and more effectively than a moisturiser. And this is the very reason why you should be using serums to level up your skincare routine! They will nourish and hydrate your skin with a powerful dose of potent ingredients.

How to use a serum

First, different serums need to be used at different times of the day, so check the product label to see what it says. Normally, serums come in a bottle with a dropper. Cleanse your face and splash a few drops into the palm of your hand, then gently apply to your face and neck. Allow the serum to be fully absorbed into your skin before locking in by applying your moisturiser or an SPF cream. Depending on the type of serum, you can apply every day.
