Ease Hormonal Skin with Magnitone London
By Emma Coleman, Magnitone Senior Brand Ambassador, Clinic Director, Aesthetic & Dermatology RGN
Hormonal skin is really an umbrella term for skin reacting to hormonal changes in the body and can occur most commonly during the teenage and menopausal years. When clients come into the clinic concerned about spots and inflammation, I always explain that the skin is highly sensitive to hormonal fluctuations in the body because it contains hormonal receptors that are finely tuned to respond to fluctuations.
In most cases, an increase in circulating testosterone levels during adolescence and peri-menopause changes the type and amount of sebum produced by the sebaceous glands in the skin, leading to an increased likelihood of inflammation and spot formation. Another example is the hormone insulin, which regulates sugar levels in the body; trials have shown that increased insulin secretion in the body is linked to increased breakouts and oil production. Therefore, foods that contain high levels of refined sugars can lead to new spot formation.
I never advocate cutting out food groups unless you have a known allergy, by the way, because food does not cause acne—it is always primarily a hormonal issue. I do, however, provide recipes and general dietary advice to clients.
Taking a Holistic Approach
Taking a holistic approach is key to getting acne under control, and this starts with your primary skincare routine. Magnitone’s wide range of cleansing devices offers the opportunity to upscale your routine, providing a deeper cleanse at home to help reduce and prevent black and whiteheads (closed and open comedo) and balance oil on the face.
Here Are My Favourites:
Magnitone Bamboo Wipe Out Makeup Removal Pads
These gently remove makeup without causing drag, feel divine, and are eco-friendly. Acne-prone skin is often very sensitive, and there is no need to use a cleanser with these pads. Apply plain water, gently wipe the pad over your face, and watch your makeup disappear.
Magnitone Steam Ahead 2
This device opens pores to allow gentle extraction of existing comedo and has a face and nose funnel for targeted cleansing. You can add your favourite essential oils, such as tea tree or fennel, to the pod for deeper skin purification.
Magnitone Barefaced 3 Vibra-Sonic Cleanse and Massage Brush
This brush offers three separate modes, including a 60-second cleanse, a "Tone It Up" massage option to infuse skin with your favourite serum or moisturiser, and the "Pulse Lift" mode to tone and brighten. These steps physically push dirt and grime out of pores and really boost skin circulation, which is so important for removing toxins from the skin while ensuring it stays nourished. I recommend using a creamy cleanser during the day and an AHA/BHA face wash at night with this device.
Creating a Skincare Ritual
I recommend this three-step routine at night. It’s lovely to create a ritual before bed when we have time to take care of ourselves. Sip some peppermint tea afterwards for a detoxifying treat.
We are all unique, so make sure that you visit a medical professional about your skin to get the best advice for you.
